WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester School Committee is scheduled to consider a proposal Sept. 3 that would establish a standing annual recognition of June and September as Pride Months across Worcester Public Schools.

The item, filed by School Committee member Tracy O’Connell Novick McCullough, asks the district to recognize Pride as a time for visibility, celebration, education and advocacy. The agenda lists the recommendation as approve and file, meaning the item is scheduled for action by the full committee at the meeting.

The proposal does not spell out specific events, curriculum changes, decorations, programming requirements or school-based activities that would be tied to the recognition. The meeting materials reviewed by What’s Up Worcester also do not identify any financial cost connected to the proposal.

If approved, the recognition would apply annually in both June and September. The agenda does not explain why both months were selected or whether individual schools would be expected to observe them in a specific way.

The Pride Month proposal appears separately from another item on the same agenda involving school flags. That public petition asks the School Committee to consider a district policy limiting which flags may be displayed on school property. The agenda recommends referring that petition to the Operations and Governance Committee rather than approving it as policy at the Sept. 3 meeting.

The two items are listed under different sections of the agenda and were filed by different people. The meeting materials do not state that the proposals are connected.

The Sept. 3 School Committee meeting will be held in the Esther Howland Chamber at Worcester City Hall. Executive session is scheduled for 5 p.m., with open session beginning at 6 p.m. A virtual attendance option is also available.

Members of the public may comment on items before the School Committee for up to two minutes, either in person or remotely. According to the agenda, speakers must provide their name, residence and the item they wish to address.

The agenda does not include statements from Worcester Public Schools administrators explaining how the annual recognition would be carried out if approved.
