Worcester Kicks Off National Recovery Month With Free Community Roller-Skating Event

WORCESTER, MA — The line for free skate rentals stayed full behind City Hall for most of the night, as Worcester kicked off National Recovery Month with a free community roller-skating event on Sept. 11.
“Don’t Be Afraid to Fall Into Recovery” ran from 6 to 9 p.m., and skates were free all night, with no charge to residents who came out. According to the event’s Instagram announcement, it was presented by Lights Venu in collaboration with Women Strong Recovery, Warriors of Opportunity, and the Latin Health Alliance Association (LAHA).
Vendors, entertainment and recovery resources were set up around the rink, and the crowd stayed engaged from the opening hour through closing. DJ Krisis kept the music going most of the night, with sets from Motivated By Mathematics and Exit Fame drawing skaters onto the rink and keeping the energy up behind City Hall. The skate rental line stayed steady all night, and the mood stayed upbeat throughout. What’s Up Worcester provided coverage of the event.
The gathering was timed to National Recovery Month, observed nationally throughout September, which organizers said promotes evidence-based treatment, recognizes people in long-term recovery, and honors service providers. Organizers said the observance is meant to raise public awareness of mental health and substance use disorders by sharing stories of hope alongside education.
This event had one simple message: “Recovery is possible. Community is powerful. You belong here.” Judging by Sept. 11’s turnout skates going out steadily all night and a crowd that stuck around through the closing set that message reached people.
