Worcester to Hold Overdose Awareness Day Event at City Hall Plaza

By Whats Up Worcester Staff
WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Division of Public Health will hold an Overdose Awareness Day event on Monday, Aug. 31, bringing community organizations, families, young people, seniors and other residents together for conversations about overdose prevention and substance use awareness.
The event is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. at City Hall Plaza, 455 Main St. and is being organized by the Worcester Division of Public Health and community partners.
According to the City of Worcester, this year’s outreach is focused not only on attendance but also on encouraging organizations to continue conversations about overdose prevention within their communities after the event.
The city said overdose can involve both prescription medications and illicit drugs. Incorrect medication use, mixing substances and unknowingly consuming fentanyl can increase overdose risk. Public health officials are emphasizing awareness, reducing stigma and knowing how to respond to an overdose.
Health Promotion and Community Strategist Irene Nyanub said organizers want the information shared during the event to continue beyond Aug. 31.
“Overdose awareness is not only about what people learn at one event,” Nyanub said in the city’s announcement. She said the goal is for participants to discuss what they experience and bring those conversations back to their families, organizations and communities.
The city is encouraging community groups to attend together, including organizations that work with youth, young adults, seniors and families. Public health officials said attending with peers and trusted adults may provide an opportunity to discuss overdose, substance use, prescription medication safety, fentanyl, prevention and stigma.
Organizations that participate may also arrange follow-up overdose awareness discussions after the event. According to the city, the Worcester Division of Public Health can help connect groups with prevention specialists and people with lived experience to support those conversations.
For Worcester residents, the event provides a local opportunity to receive information about overdose prevention and discuss a public health issue affecting individuals, families and community organizations across the city.
The event is open to community leaders, youth and young adult organizations, senior organizations, community groups and other partners. The city’s release did not specify whether registration is required or provide additional details about individual activities planned during the three-hour event.
More information about the City of Worcester is available through the City of Worcester website. A dedicated event information page was not included in the city’s Aug. 19 announcement.
