As of May 17, the United States had reported more than 81.6 million confirmed COVID-19 cases. COVID-19 has killed almost 992,000 Americans, the largest death toll of any country.

In the week ending May 17, there were an average of 24.3 daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 Americans across the country. In total, the United States has reported 24,885.1 cases per 100,000 people and 302.3 deaths per 100,000 people.

In the week ending May 17, Massachusetts had an average of 56.3 daily new coronavirus cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Massachusetts has reported the 21st highest instances per 100,000 state population, totaling 26,250.4 cases. Massachusetts has the 18th lowest death rate of any of the 50 states, at 295.9 deaths per 100,000 people.

While the virus struck the nation’s major cities hardest in the early months of the pandemic, the infection has infected practically every metropolis. Outbreaks are more likely to occur in places where large numbers of people congregate, putting cities with significant concentrations of colleges, penal facilities, and nursing homes at risk.

The Springfield metropolitan region has reported 181,287 confirmed cases, or 25,917.4 per 100,000 population, the most of any city in Massachusetts since the outbreak began.

Worcester, which has the second-highest number of cases per capita, has reported 24,254.0 cases per 100,000 people.

The coronavirus outbreak has resulted in widespread unemployment throughout the country, as consumer-facing firms have been forced to close and clients have been advised to stay at home. Springfield’s unemployment rate peaked at 17.1 percent in June 2020 and is now at 6.2 percent as of November 2021.

24/7 Wall St. gathered and evaluated data from state and local health officials to establish the metropolitan region in each state with the highest number of COVID-19 cases per capita. As of May 17, we ranked metropolitan areas based on the number of confirmed COVID-19 infections per 100,000 people. Using U.S. Census Bureau border definitions, data was aggregated from the county level to the metropolitan area level. The population statistics used to update case and death totals are five-year estimates from the United States Census Bureau’s 2019 American Community Survey.
