WORCESTER — There’s something magical about hearing music echo through the walls of Mechanics Hall—and this August, you can experience that magic for free.

Mechanics Hall is serving up a trio of midday performances featuring the legendary Worcester Organ—also known as the Hook Organ—and it’s a series you won’t want to miss.

Concert Dates:

  • Wednesday, August 6 – Dr. Carol Williams kicks off the series with a solo program packed with tradition and flair. Her international reputation as a bold, genre-blending organist guarantees a captivating show.
  • Wednesday, August 13 – The spotlight turns local with the Worcester Chapter AGO Organists Artist Showcase, curated by Peter Krasinski. Expect a showcase of talent from right here in the community.
  • Wednesday, August 20 – Gavin Klein, a rising star and Holy Cross Organ Scholar, closes out the series. Named one of Diapason magazine’s “20 Under 30,” Klein brings global experience and youthful brilliance back to Mechanics Hall.

All performances begin at 12:00 PM, last about an hour, and take place in the breathtaking Great Hall, right on the 3rd floor of 321 Main Street. (Yes, there’s an elevator!)

Admission is FREE and open to the public, and yes—you’re welcome to bring your lunch or grab a light snack at concessions.

A Bit of History: Installed in 1864 by Elias and George Hook, the Worcester Organ is the oldest unaltered four-keyboard pipe organ in the Western Hemisphere that still lives at its original location. Restored in 1982, it remains a treasured piece of living history and a powerhouse of sound.

Mechanics Hall’s Education & Outreach Manager Christon Carney sums it up perfectly:

“The Worcester Organ is both a cultural landmark and a living instrument… Longtime organ enthusiasts, and those simply looking for a beautiful midday escape, can expect dynamic performances from an impressive range of talents.”
