From Childhood Memories to Center Stage: Mrs. Doubtfire Delivers Heart, Humor, and Nostalgia at the Hanover Theatre

By Reanna Filmore
Some movies become more than just films. They become part of our childhood, filling our homes with laughter and creating memories that stay with us for years. For many millennials, Mrs. Doubtfire is one of those movies.
When I heard that Mrs. Doubtfire was coming to the The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts, I knew I had to go. Even better, I had the opportunity to bring my daughter along and share a piece of my childhood with her.
From the moment the curtain rose, the cast had the audience completely captivated.
Based on the beloved 1993 film, the musical follows the story of Daniel Hillard, an out-of-work actor who goes to extraordinary lengths to stay close to his children after a difficult divorce. While the story is packed with hilarious disguises, quick costume changes, and unforgettable comedy, at its heart it is a story about family, love, and the lengths parents will go for their children.

The stage adaptation beautifully captures everything fans loved about the movie while adding its own Broadway magic. The catchy musical numbers, energetic choreography, stunning set changes, and incredible performances made the show feel fresh while honoring the original story that so many of us grew up with.
What stood out most was the atmosphere inside the theater.

The house was completely packed, and from beginning to end it felt like the entire audience was laughing together. The laughter was constant, genuine, and contagious. Every joke landed, every heartfelt moment connected, and by the final curtain the crowd erupted into a well-deserved standing ovation.
There was something especially meaningful about seeing so many parents, grandparents, and children experiencing the show together. For adults, it was a nostalgic trip back to a favorite childhood movie. For younger audience members, it was the chance to discover the story for the very first time.
That shared experience is what makes live theater so special.

As always, I left the Hanover Theatre reminded why it remains one of Worcester’s greatest cultural treasures. Every visit feels special, from the beauty of the historic theater itself to the incredible Broadway productions it continues to bring to our city.
If Mrs. Doubtfire is still on your list, don’t miss the opportunity. Whether you grew up quoting every line from the movie or you’re introducing the story to a new generation, this production is full of laughter, heart, and joy.
Sometimes the best memories aren’t the ones we look back on.
They’re the ones we get to relive while creating brand new ones with the people we love.
