Worcester Opens Three Cooling Centers Tuesday and Wednesday as High Temperatures Approach

By Jerry Filmore
WORCESTER, MA — Residents seeking relief from forecasted high temperatures will have access to three cooling centers across Worcester on Tuesday, July 14, and Wednesday, July 15.
The City of Worcester announced the activation Monday, July 13, and said water will be available for distribution at each location. The same locations and operating hours will be available on both days, according to the city’s official cooling center announcement.
Cooling center locations and hours
The following schedule applies Tuesday and Wednesday:
- Worcester Senior Center, 128 Providence St.: 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- Worcester Public Library Main Branch, 3 Salem Square: 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
- YMCA of Central Massachusetts, 766 Main St.: 8:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The schedule provides residents with options from the morning into the evening. The YMCA will open first at 8:30 a.m., while the Main Library will remain available until 8:30 p.m.
All three facilities are accessible through the Worcester Regional Transit Authority. The city said the WRTA also provides curb-to-curb ADA transportation for eligible riders.
Residents who need help identifying a bus route, arranging ADA transportation or learning how to use the transit system can call the WRTA at 508-791-9782 or review the agency’s routes and schedules. Current WRTA fare information states that fixed-route and paratransit services will remain fare-free through June 30, 2027.
City officials said prolonged exposure to high temperatures and humidity can interfere with the body’s natural cooling systems, raise body temperature and increase the risk of illness. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, limit strenuous physical activity and check on neighbors who may need assistance.
The announcement does not identify age requirements, registration requirements or other restrictions for using the cooling centers. Residents seeking clarification before visiting can contact Worcester 311.
The city’s announcement also includes the complete cooling center schedule in Spanish. Additional seasonal health and safety information is available through the City of Worcester’s Summer Safety webpage.
