There’s a new leader stepping up at one of Worcester’s most iconic spaces—and it’s a name the local arts scene already knows well.
Mechanics Hall just announced Meghan Montaner as its new Executive Director, following the retirement of longtime leader Kathleen Gagne. Starting July 21, Montaner will officially take the reins of this historic hall that’s hosted everything from Yo-Yo Ma to Frederick Douglass—and she’s bringing a resume as powerful as the building itself.
If you’ve been around the Worcester arts community, you’ve seen Montaner’s work. She spent the last 18 years helping build The Hanover Theatre & Conservatory from the ground up. From fundraising for its $32 million restoration to creating programs that now serve over 20,000 students a year, Montaner’s fingerprints are all over the city’s cultural transformation. She’s got local roots, a master’s in theater education from Emerson, and a passion for using the arts to lift communities.

But don’t expect her to coast on credentials. Montaner says she’s ready to get to work.
“I’m deeply committed to Worcester and excited to lead Mechanics Hall into a new chapter,” she said. “Its history, its role in education, and its connection to the people of this city are what drew me in.”
She’s not the only one excited. Mechanics Hall Board President Peter Thomas said she was the unanimous pick after a national search, praising her “thoughtful leadership” and deep Worcester ties. Even Gagne, who led the Hall through decades of growth, gave Montaner a glowing sendoff: “Her passion for education and community will serve the Hall beautifully.”
Mechanics Hall isn’t just some fancy concert venue. It’s a space where world-class performers meet everyday Worcester folks. Where history lives in the walls and future leaders find inspiration on stage. With Montaner at the helm, it looks like the Hall is staying true to its roots—while making room for something new.
