Massasoit Road Reconstruction Project to Address Safety, Sidewalks, and Traffic Concerns

By Jerry Filmore
What’s Up Worcester
A reconstruction project planned for Massasoit Road is expected to address roadway conditions, pedestrian safety, and overall accessibility along a heavily traveled corridor in Worcester.
The project will cover the section of Massasoit Road between Grafton Street and Sunderland Road. City officials say the work will focus on improving pavement conditions, sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic safety while making the roadway more accessible for all users.
According to the City of Worcester, the project is being led by the Department of Public Works Engineering Division in collaboration with the Department of Transportation and Mobility. The effort follows the city’s Complete Streets Policy and is informed by several long-term plans, including the Green Worcester Plan, Mobility Action Plan, Vision Zero Safety Action Plan, and the Safe Routes to School program.
Massasoit Road is classified as a minor arterial roadway and carries significant daily traffic. Data provided by the city shows approximately 8,263 vehicles travel between Grafton Street and Heywood Street each day, while approximately 14,281 vehicles travel between Heywood Street and Sunderland Road.
Speed data also indicates that vehicles frequently exceed the posted 25 mile per hour speed limit. In some sections, the 85th percentile speed reaches as high as 34 miles per hour, meaning a portion of drivers are traveling well above the limit. Higher speeds and traffic volumes are of particular concern near Rice Square Elementary School, where a reduced 20 mile per hour school zone speed limit is in place during school days.
Crash data further highlights safety concerns along the corridor. Over the last four full non-Covid impacted years from 2022 through 2025, there were 50 reported crashes along this section of Massasoit Road. Of those, 34 involved property damage only, 6 involved non-fatal injuries, and 9 were listed as unknown. Two of the injury crashes involved vulnerable roadway users, including one pedestrian and one cyclist.
The project aims to address these issues through a combination of roadway reconstruction and safety improvements. Planned upgrades include improved sidewalks with ADA accessibility, new crosswalks, updated roadway design, and the addition of bike lanes. Officials say the goal is to create a safer environment for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.
A public information meeting is scheduled for May 7 from 6 to 7:30 PM at Rice Square Elementary School. Residents will have an opportunity to learn more about the project, review preliminary plans, and provide feedback.
Construction is currently expected to begin in summer 2026 following the completion of the design phase and public input process.
Residents with questions or comments about the project can contact the city at mobility@worcesterma.gov.
