Historic Sports Moments in Worcester, Massachusetts

By What’s Up Worcester Staff

Worcester has a deep sports history that often gets overlooked. From baseball firsts to legendary comebacks and championship milestones, the city has been home to moments that shaped sports at the national level. Here are some of the most notable highlights along with the sources verifying each one.

1. The First Perfect Game in Major League Baseball (1880)

On June 12, 1880, J. Lee Richmond of the Worcester Worcesters threw the first perfect game in Major League Baseball history. It happened right here in Worcester at the Worcester Agricultural Fairgrounds (Driving Park). Richmond retired all 27 batters without allowing a single baserunner and secured his place in baseball history.

2. The First Ryder Cup Played in the United States (1927)

The first official Ryder Cup ever held on American soil took place at Worcester Country Club in 1927. Team USA, captained by Walter Hagen, defeated Great Britain 9.5 to 2.5. This event began one of golf’s most iconic international traditions.

3. One of Hockey’s Greatest Comebacks: Worcester IceCats (2003)

On March 30, 2003, the Worcester IceCats staged one of the greatest comebacks in AHL history. Trailing 6-1 entering the third period, the IceCats scored six unanswered goals including Jeff Panzer’s hat trick winner in overtime to defeat the Manchester Monarchs 7-6. Fans still recall this as one of the most electric nights in Worcester hockey history at the DCU Center (then the Worcester Centrum).
