WORCESTER, MA — Expresso Latin Radio has received federal approval for a low-power FM station at 97.5 in Worcester, giving the community media organization a path from online streaming to the FM dial.
The Federal Communications Commission says it granted Expresso Latin Radio Inc.’s application after dismissing a competing Worcester application. The approval does not mean the station is broadcasting at 97.5 FM yet. Expresso Latin Radio said its launch date and programming schedule will be announced later.
The organization said the station will carry local news and community information, sports, Latin music, entertainment, educational programs and interviews. Carmen Lounis leads Expresso Latin Radio alongside Amalfis Rodriguez and Jensy Rosario, according to a Sept. 25 announcement from the organization.
“Our goal is to provide a place where people can hear information that matters to them, celebrate our culture, enjoy our music, learn, and share their stories,” Lounis said in the announcement.
Expresso Latin Radio already offers online programming, including El Expresso Matutino. Its planned FM station would give Worcester listeners another way to access its programs once broadcasting begins.
The FCC previously listed Expresso Latin Radio’s Worcester proposal among competing applications for the same frequency. Its recent decision resolves that competition in Expresso Latin Radio’s favor.
