Explosion Behind Worcester Elementary School Prompts Concern and Police Response

The Worcester Public Schools informed parents that there was a small explosion behind an elementary school early Sunday morning. This happened near the Belmont Street Community School at around 4 a.m. on Sunday. The explosion occurred because some homeless people in the area had lit a tin can on fire as a source of heat. The notice was sent out to parents on Monday.

To be cautious, police officers were at the scene on Monday morning. Later, the Worcester Police Department explained to the school officials that the explosion set off the ShotSpotter system, which alerted the police.

This incident highlights the difficulties faced by homeless individuals in Worcester, who sometimes use fire for warmth. Although this particular incident didn’t cause significant harm, it underscores the importance of providing support and resources to those in need in the community.
