It’s the 48-hour countdown to Christmas, and if you’ve driven down Shrewsbury Street lately, the energy is electric. Between the “Restaurant Row” neon and the last-minute shoppers on the East Side, the neighborhood is buzzing. But with the crowds comes the annual challenge: maintaining the high quality of life our residents deserve.
Today, we’re looking at how the East Side is staying festive, clean, and safe during the final rush of 2025.
1. Local Happenings: Catch the Last Bit of Magic
If you’re looking to soak up the season before the big day, there are three key events happening right in our backyard tonight and this week:
- Santa on the Common: Tonight, Dec. 23, at 5:30 PM, head to the Shrewsbury Town Common (just a quick hop from the East Side). It’s free, festive, and the last chance for a local Santa sighting. If you stay until 7:00 PM, you can catch Caroling on the Common at the gazebo.
- The Polar Express Party: Families can head to the Worcester Public Library (Main Branch) tonight at 6:00 PM. Expect pajamas, cocoa, and cookies—a perfect way to wind down the kids before Christmas Eve.
- Post-Holiday Rock: If the carols have you burnt out, Rambudikon’s Dark Christmas hits the Worcester Palladium on Dec. 26.
2. Neighborhood Quality of Life: The “Clean Streets” Push
2025 was a milestone year for Worcester’s Quality of Life Team. The unit has officially expanded to 10 members, focusing on a “Neighborhoods First” model that hits home on the East Side by prioritizing litter, illegal dumping, and nuisance inspections.
The Clean Streets Collective (CSC)
The city’s new Clean Streets Collective is making it easier for East Side residents to tackle litter. Through partners like the Worcester Green Corps, neighbors can now pick up free green trash bags specifically for street litter. Fill them up, put them out on your regular trash day, and the city takes them for free: no yellow bag required.
WooBins on the East Side
Keep an eye out for the WooBins, the city’s new dual-stream waste and recycling bins. While they debuted as a pilot in Green Island and lower Grafton Street, the municipality has now installed 150-200 combination bins citywide to help keep high-traffic areas like Shrewsbury Street litter-free while showcasing art from local creators.
3. Safety Check: Fact-Checked Tips for the Final 48 Hours
The Worcester Police Department and Fire Department have issued specific warnings for the 2025 season.
Porch Pirate Defense
Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 8, 2025, Worcester recorded 43 reported package thefts. While this is down from the 69 thefts reported during the same window in 2024, the risk remains high today as deliveries peak.
- Tip: If you won’t be home for a final delivery, use the Amazon Lockers at the pharmacies on Grafton or Shrewsbury St.
- Verify: Many of this year’s thefts have occurred in lobbies or shared mailrooms, so don’t leave packages unattended in common areas.
Fire & Electrical Safety
In a neighborhood filled with historic triple-deckers, electrical safety is non-negotiable. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services reminds residents:
- No “Daisy-Chaining”: Never plug one extension cord into another. This is a leading cause of electrical fires in dense residential areas.
- Water Your Tree: By Dec. 23, real trees are at their driest. Check the water level twice today to prevent a fast-spreading fire.
What’s Next for the East Side?
The city is currently finalizing its Zero Waste Master Plan, a 10-year roadmap to change how we handle trash. The most recent community survey results are set to shape neighborhood cleanup efforts and Zero Waste strategies in 2026.
Stay connected, East Side. Have a safe and happy holiday!
