Smith Pond Beach Closed After E. Coli Levels Exceed Water Quality Standards

WORCESTER, MA — Residents are being told to stay out of the water at Smith Pond Beach after laboratory testing found E. coli bacteria at levels exceeding water quality standards.
The City of Worcester announced Wednesday, Aug. 5, that the semi-public beach, also known as Cooks Pond, is closed until further notice. The closure was issued by the Department of Inspectional Services and the Worcester Division of Public Health.
According to the City, additional laboratory testing will be required before the beach can reopen.
What the City Found
The City said testing detected E. coli bacteria in the water at levels above acceptable standards.
E. coli is a type of bacteria found in the digestive tract of warm-blooded animals, including geese, pets and humans. Unlike bacteria that naturally live in lakes and ponds, E. coli can enter the water from outside sources.
The City said possible sources can include direct contact with animal waste, runoff during rainstorms, leaking septic systems or illicit sewer connections that discharge sewage into the stormwater system.
The Aug. 5 notice does not identify a confirmed source for the elevated E. coli levels at Smith Pond.

One concern for residents is that E. coli contamination cannot be identified simply by looking at the water.
The City said there are no visual indicators of E. coli and that laboratory testing is necessary to determine whether bacteria levels are within acceptable limits.

The City’s notice directs all people to remain out of the water until further notice.
