Patrick Blashill Talks Bringing Joy, Laughter, and Heart to The Music Man at The Hanover Theatre

By Reanna Filmore
The classic charm of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man is marching its way into The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts May 15–17, and after speaking with Patrick Blashill, who plays the lovable and stubborn Mayor Shinn, audiences are in for something truly special.
During my interview with Blashill ahead of the Worcester performances, his excitement for the production was impossible to miss. From heartfelt moments on stage to laugh-out-loud comedy, he described this touring production as a joyful celebration of community, music, and human connection.
Blashill’s portrayal of Mayor Shinn brings both humor and heart to River City. He explained that Mayor Shinn begins the story as a traditional, set-in-his-ways mayor who struggles with the changes happening around him, especially involving his daughter. Suspicious of fast-talking salesman Harold Hill from the very beginning, Mayor Shinn is convinced he’s a fraud. But as the story unfolds, even he begins to recognize the positive impact Hill has on the town.
What makes the role especially meaningful for Blashill is the humanity behind the comedy.
“One of the fun challenges,” he shared, “is making the character funny without trying to be funny. These are real people.”
He also explained that part of what makes the role work is treating every moment honestly rather than playing into caricature.
“You have to play the truth of the person,” he said. “That’s where the comedy really lives.”
After spending years performing in more serious productions, Blashill called this role “a dream come true.” He spoke warmly about the chemistry within the cast and the joy of performing alongside such talented actors every night. One of his favorite moments in the show involves a tender scene with Mrs. Shinn where the two sway together to the music, a quiet, heartfelt moment that reveals a softer side of the character.
“It’s this beautiful little human moment,” Blashill said. “For a second, you just see two people who care about each other.”
That balance of humor, warmth, and sincerity is exactly why Meredith Willson’s The Music Man has remained a beloved classic for generations.
Blashill believes audiences continue to connect with the show because of its strong themes of community and togetherness. In a world that can often feel divided, he says the production offers something refreshing: wholesome fun, uplifting music, and laughter that brings people together.

“There’s something really comforting about this story,” he explained. “People are craving joy and connection right now.”
And the music? According to Blashill, audiences are going to love every second of it.
He praised the show’s incredible vocals, energetic choreography, and standout performances throughout the cast, especially the famous barbershop quartet numbers that continue to wow crowds night after night. He also highlighted the inventive choreography by Tony Award winner Josh Bergasse, calling the dancing both physically demanding and visually exciting.
“This show just brings joy,” Blashill said. “There’s innocence to it that people really need right now.”
He added that audiences can expect top-tier performances from every member of the cast.
“The dancing, the singing, the acting, everybody is working at such a high level,” he said. “It’s really exciting to be part of.”
The cast has been touring since January, traveling across the country and building strong bonds along the way. Blashill described the cast dynamic as a family where everyone supports one another both on and off stage.
“We really have each other’s backs,” he shared. “That’s what makes a long tour work.”
Despite the demanding schedule, Blashill said the experience has been overwhelmingly positive, giving the cast the chance to explore different parts of the country and connect with audiences everywhere they go.
“You realize how much goodness there is out there,” he said. “People have been so welcoming everywhere we’ve traveled.”
After months on the road, the cast is preparing for their first break following the Worcester performances, making this weekend’s shows even more meaningful.
“We’ve been going since January,” Blashill laughed. “So there’s definitely excitement about seeing family and sleeping in our own beds for a little while.”
For theater lovers, families, and anyone looking for an uplifting night out, Meredith Willson’s The Music Man promises a perfect mix of nostalgia, comedy, heart, and spectacular live performance.
So if you’re looking to smile, laugh, tap your feet, and leave the theater feeling good, don’t miss Meredith Willson’s The Music Man at The Hanover Theatre and Conservatory for the Performing Arts this weekend.
River City is coming to Worcester, and according to Patrick Blashill, the band is definitely worth joining.
