On June 12, 1880, J. Lee Richmond of the Worcester Worcesters threw the first perfect game in Major League Baseball history. It happened right here in Worcester at the Worcester Agricultural Fairgrounds (Driving Park). Richmond retired all 27 batters without allowing a single baserunner and secured his place in baseball history.

2. The First Ryder Cup Played in the United States (1927)
The first official Ryder Cup ever held on American soil took place at Worcester Country Club in 1927. Team USA, captained by Walter Hagen, defeated Great Britain 9.5 to 2.5. This event began one of golf’s most iconic international traditions.

4. Holy Cross Wins the 1952 College World Series
The College of the Holy Cross won the 1952 NCAA College World Series, defeating Missouri 8-4. This victory remains one of New England’s most significant college baseball achievements. Holy Cross is still the only Northeastern school ever to win the College World Series.
