Greater Worcester Community Foundation

Here’s something Worcester should be proud of: we’ve got one of the most impactful community foundations in New England right here in our backyard. The Greater Worcester Community Foundation (GWCF) isn’t just another nonprofit—it’s been a cornerstone of giving in Worcester County since 1975. For nearly 50 years, they’ve been connecting generous people with the causes that matter most in our neighborhoods.
Serving Every Corner of Worcester County
From Worcester’s downtown streets to the smallest hilltowns you might drive through on the way to Wachusett, GWCF serves all 60 communities in Worcester County—more than 850,000 people in total. Their mission is simple but powerful: strengthen our region by fueling nonprofits and giving residents the tools to build a better future together.
And they’re not doing it small. The foundation manages over 600 individual funds and about $200–230 million in assets, distributing $8.5 to $10 million every year to nonprofits that make a real difference across Central Massachusetts.
Scholarships That Open Doors
If there’s one thing families in Worcester County can agree on, it’s that college is expensive. GWCF has been stepping up on that front since 1978, when it launched what is now the largest source of scholarship support in the county.
The numbers tell the story: 140 scholarship funds, nearly 10,000 awards, and $14.8 million granted since the program began. In 2025 alone, they awarded $1.84 million to 443 students. That’s not just money—that’s a ticket to opportunity, a chance for Worcester kids to chase big dreams without drowning in debt.
As one 2025 scholarship recipient put it in GWCF’s yearbook: “This scholarship is not merely monetary support: it’s a powerful reminder that there are those who are willing to help people like me reach our full potential.”
That’s Worcester spirit right there.

Building Leaders for Tomorrow
GWCF’s work isn’t just about dollars—it’s about developing the people and organizations that shape Worcester County’s future.
Sarah Shugrue, Director of Grantmaking & Capacity Building, has been a key voice in making sure the foundation’s resources reach grassroots groups and emerging leaders who know their communities best. Through her leadership, GWCF has strengthened nonprofits by providing not only funding but also training, tools, and connections.
One of the standout initiatives is NTL: Nourishing Tomorrow’s Leaders, a program designed to prepare and empower diverse community members for board service. By equipping local leaders with the skills and knowledge to serve effectively, GWCF is making sure the boards of Worcester’s nonprofits reflect the communities they serve. That means more inclusive decision-making and stronger organizations all around.
Different Ways to Give
Not everyone gives the same way, and GWCF knows that. They’ve built flexible options so anyone with the will to help can make an impact:
- Start your own fund with $10,000 and shape your giving for the long run.
- Scholarship funds start at $30,000, directly changing young lives.
- Donor-Advised Funds let you stay hands-on in deciding where your money goes.
- Complex gifts like stock or property? They handle those too.
It’s philanthropy without the red tape—practical, tailored, and built to last.

Trusted and Transparent
In a time when people want to know exactly where their dollars are going, GWCF has stepped up. In 2024, they earned the Gold Seal of Transparency from Candid, a mark of accountability that matters when trust is everything.
And this isn’t just a local thing. GWCF ranks among the 120 largest community foundations in the U.S. and is one of the top 30 in Massachusetts. For a region that sometimes feels overshadowed by Boston, that’s big.
Why This Matters for Worcester
The Foundation isn’t just about writing checks. It’s about building a culture of generosity and keeping resources circulating in our own backyard. They’re the reason nonprofits can launch new ideas, students can afford college, and community leaders get the training to take organizations to the next level.
Almost 50 years in, the Greater Worcester Community Foundation has proven one thing: Central Mass knows how to take care of its own. And if the past five decades are any indication, the next 50 will be even more impactful.
