In a significant breakthrough in the tragic murders of 27-year-old Chasity Nunez and her 11-year-old daughter Zella in Worcester, the second suspect, Dejan Belnavis, 27, has been apprehended. U.S. Marshals successfully took him into custody on Monday during a routine traffic stop in San Diego, California.
The Worcester community was left in shock last Tuesday afternoon when the mother-daughter duo fell victim to a fatal ambush while seated in a parked SUV. Belnavis, wanted for armed assault with intent to murder and possession of a firearm without a license, was identified as a key figure in the investigation, prompting authorities to offer a $10,000 reward for information leading to his whereabouts.
Law enforcement officials credited a combination of tips and advanced technology for helping them “pinpoint” Belnavis’s location. Last week, the first suspect, Karel Mangual, was arrested in connection with the shootings and is currently being held without bail. Prosecutors are now working to extradite Belnavis back to Massachusetts, where charges against both suspects will be upgraded to murder.
Surveillance footage allegedly captured Belnavis and Mangual opening fire on the parked SUV, although a motive for the shootings has yet to be disclosed.
