MassReconnect Initiative Offers Free Community College Education to Massachusetts Adults Aged 25 and Above
Commonwealth Launches Program Enabling Adults to Pursue Associate Degrees and Certificates without Tuition Costs
August 16, 2023
In a groundbreaking move, the state of Massachusetts has unveiled its MassReconnect initiative, a bold step towards offering free higher education opportunities for residents aged 25 and older. With a primary focus on aiding individuals in obtaining associate degrees and certificates, the program aims to empower adults by eliminating financial barriers to education. The official launch of MassReconnect is scheduled for the Fall of 2023.
As part of the outreach effort, MassReconnect has scheduled informative sessions on August 26, 2023, during the Super Saturday Registration Event. Interested individuals are encouraged to register for the event and attend information sessions at 10:00 AM, 11:00 AM (with a Spanish presentation), or 12:00 PM.
To qualify for MassReconnect, prospective students must meet certain criteria:
- Be 25 years of age or older on the commencement of classes (September 6 for the Fall 2023 semester)
- Possess permanent legal residency in the Commonwealth for a minimum of one year before the term begins
- Not have previously earned an associate or bachelor’s degree, or their equivalent
- Enroll in a program of study leading to an associate degree or certificate, with a minimum of six credits per semester
- Maintain satisfactory academic progress according to the college’s Satisfactory Academic Policy (SAP)
- Complete the 2023-2024 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
Applicants’ eligibility will be determined based on the information provided during the enrollment process and other available data. However, it’s important to note that ineligibility could result in a balance owed to the College and a requirement to repay any received funds.
Worried about eligibility? Rest assured, as MassReconnect is just one of several financial aid options available to support students in covering their educational expenses. By submitting the 2023-2024 FAFSA, students can explore various federal, state, and institutional aid programs tailored to their needs.
MassReconnect will not only cover tuition and required fees but will also extend an allowance towards books and supplies. This funding will come into play if eligible expenses surpass other grants or scholarships provided through financial aid. A key requirement for students to benefit from the funding is regular attendance in their courses.
With the official program launch slated for the Fall of 2023, the definitive eligibility guidelines are anticipated to be finalized in mid-August. Ahead of the due date for Fall 2023 semester bills on August 23, the Financial Aid Office will commence the distribution of funds to eligible candidates.
For those eager to embark on their MassReconnect journey, the following steps outline the process:
- Apply to Quinsigamond Community College, if not already enrolled in a degree or certificate program.
- Complete the 2023-2024 FAFSA to unlock various financial aid opportunities.
- Enroll in a minimum of 6 credits per semester, and for any registration queries, reach out to Academic Advising at [email protected] or 508.854.4308.
- Submit your contact information for eligibility review. Utilize the provided form, using your QCC student email or personal email as applicable.
With MassReconnect paving the way for affordable education, Massachusetts is taking a giant stride towards empowering its adult population and fostering lifelong learning opportunities for all.
