In a move aimed at addressing the increasing strain on the state’s shelter system, Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey, a Democrat, has declared a state of emergency and is urging the federal government to take immediate action. Governor Healey is specifically requesting the Biden administration to expedite work authorizations for immigrants and allocate additional funding to states, a call that resonates with other regional leaders like Democratic New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

The pressing issue revolves around the influx of migrants that has put immense pressure on the state’s emergency shelter facilities. Governor Healey revealed that the number of families seeking refuge in state emergency shelters has risen significantly, reaching nearly 5,600 families, up from 3,100 just a year ago. She emphasized that a considerable portion of these families are migrants who have recently arrived in Massachusetts.

Highlighting the extraordinary efforts of state employees and partners who have diligently worked to expand shelter capacity by almost 80% in the past year, Governor Healey acknowledged the limitations the shelter system now faces. The demand has surged to a level that the system cannot sustain, particularly due to the challenges of a scarcity of affordable housing options and barriers to securing employment, leading to a decreased rate of families leaving the shelters.

In an official statement released on Tuesday, Governor Healey articulated her stance on the matter: “I am declaring a state of emergency in Massachusetts and urging my partners in the federal government to take the action we need to address this crisis by streamlining the work authorization process and passing comprehensive immigration reform. Many of the new arrivals to our state desperately want to work, and we have historic workforce demands across all industries. I am also calling on all of our partners – from cities and towns to the faith community, philanthropic organizations, and human service providers – to rise to this challenge and do whatever you can to help us meet this moment.”

To mitigate the challenges posed by the situation, the Healey administration has collaborated with organizations such as the United Way of Massachusetts Bay and The Boston Foundation. Together, they have launched a relief fund aimed at addressing the immediate needs of the newly arrived migrants.

Governor Healey’s declaration of a state of emergency underscores the urgency of the situation, as state officials and partners work tirelessly to find solutions to the strain on Massachusetts’ shelter system. The call for federal action and support, along with the collaborative efforts of various organizations, demonstrates a united front in addressing this pressing issue.
