WORCESTER, MA — Worcester officials are seeking technical ideas and industry guidance as the city explores how a fiber broadband network could expand access to reliable, high-speed internet for residents, schools, businesses, nonprofits, and public institutions.
The City of Worcester announced July 30 that it has issued a Request for Information, commonly called an RFI, related to the possible development of a citywide Fiber-to-the-Premises broadband network. The city said the process is intended to gather information that could help increase access to affordable and reliable internet service.
Fiber-to-the-premises generally refers to broadband infrastructure that brings fiber-optic service directly to homes, businesses, and other buildings rather than stopping at a neighborhood connection point. Organizations may submit responses by email to ContactDoIT@worcesterma.gov using the subject line “RFI – Fiber to the Premises Response.” Submitters with large files may contact the same address to request access to a secure file-transfer service.
After the submission period closes, the city may use the responses to evaluate possible broadband technologies, partnership structures, network operations, and digital inclusion strategies.
