A family argument turns deadly, shaking a Worcester neighborhood and leaving a city asking why.
WORCESTER— The city is mourning its first homicide of 2025 after a fatal shooting unfolded on Beacon Street this past Wednesday. What started as a family dispute ended in tragedy, with one man dead and his younger brother now facing a stack of serious charges.
The shooting took place around 7:30 PM on June 18, right outside 164 Beacon Street. Police say the victim was approached on the sidewalk by his brother, 35-year-old Michael Wilcox Jr., who allegedly pushed him and then pulled a handgun, firing a fatal shot to the upper chest and neck area.
The man was rushed to the hospital in critical condition but later died. Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name.
After the shooting, Wilcox fled the area. Police apprehended him a few hours later and took him into custody.
Wilcox was arraigned on Friday, June 20, at Worcester Central District Court. Family members came out in large numbers, filling the courtroom in a scene heavy with emotion and disbelief. Judge Janet J. McGuiggan entered not guilty pleas on his behalf and ordered Wilcox held without bail.
He now faces the following charges:
- Murder
- Armed assault with intent to murder
- Assault and battery with a firearm
- Carrying a firearm without a license
- Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
- Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a dwelling
The Worcester Police Department and the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office have both confirmed that this is being treated as a domestic violence case.
