WORCESTER — In response to dangerously cold temperatures affecting the city’s unhoused population, St. John’s Food for the Poor Program held an emergency planning meeting on Friday evening to organize a safe, temporary shelter plan.
Dozens of volunteers, community organizers, and local partners gathered at the St. Francis Xavier Center on Temple Street to coordinate the effort. The team announced plans to open the shelter doors as early as Saturday, January 31, but they stressed that the operation relies entirely on community support.
The urgency of the meeting was driven by the events of the past weekend, where staff and volunteers witnessed the harsh reality facing their guests. Organizers described the “double-edged sword” of seeing residents warm and safe during meal times, only to be heartbroken watching them return to the freezing cold afterward.
“Moments like that make it clear why planning and coordination matter,” organizers shared during the meeting. “If we stick together, we really can make change.”
Immediate Needs: Volunteers and Supplies
To keep the shelter running, St. John’s is issuing a direct call for volunteers to cover overnight shifts. The shelter aims to be operational immediately, starting Saturday night.
Volunteer Shifts Needed:
- Evening: 5:00 PM – 11:00 PM
- Overnight: 11:00 PM – 5:00 AM
While these shifts are critical, organizers emphasized that all volunteers are always welcome to help in any way, whether for shorter periods or different tasks.
Donations and Supplies: The program has created an Amazon Wish List for essential supplies. Residents can view the list by scanning the QR code on the program’s flyers or visiting their social media pages. Additionally, the shelter is seeking donations of meals to help feed guests during operational hours.

Community Response
The Friday evening meeting saw a strong turnout from the Worcester community, signaling a readiness to tackle the crisis. Attendees included District 2 City Councilor Robert A. Bilotta, along with representatives from various local organizations who pledged their support. What’s Up Worcester was also in attendance to document the planning process and support the call for community action.
