WORCESTER — With the new Doherty Memorial High School now open, attention has shifted to another major education infrastructure effort in the city: a long-planned modernization of Burncoat High School. This week, the project advanced into a critical planning stage that sets the path for future design and construction.

Moving Forward with MSBA: Feasibility Study Underway At the end of April 2025, the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) Board approved a formal Feasibility Study for Burncoat High School, allowing Worcester Public Schools (WPS) and the City of Worcester to begin detailed evaluation of possible building solutions. This approval means the project still in early planning can now explore options including renovation, addition, or full replacement of the existing facility. The Feasibility Study is a required step in the MSBA process before any final design or construction decisions can be made. Burncoat High School, originally built in 1964, has long been a priority for upgrades. The MSBA eligibility and feasibility approvals mark significant progress after more than a decade of attempts by the district to secure state support.

Cost Considerations and Timeline While some local officials have discussed estimates for a future Burncoat project in the several hundred million dollar range, the MSBA and the district have not released official total project costs yet. The feasibility phase will include detailed cost analysis as part of its planning work. MSBA typically guides communities through a multi-year process that includes feasibility, schematic design, design development, and construction phases. Overall, the process from feasibility entry to project completion often spans five to seven years, but specific timelines will be clearer later in the design process.

Community Engagement and Planning Ahead As part of the feasibility work, WPS and City planners are expected to engage with the public on educational goals, site planning, and community impacts. Although issues such as traffic and neighborhood infrastructure are often part of broader municipal planning, any project-specific studies such as traffic impact or athletic field use will be developed later in the planning process in coordination with appropriate city departments. In support of the planning effort, the City of Worcester has issued a request for services for an Owner’s Project Manager (OPM). That manager will help guide the feasibility and schematic design processes, but the contract does not yet imply a finalized project or guaranteed construction.

How This Fits With Other Local Projects The Burncoat project follows the successful MSBA-supported rebuilding of Doherty Memorial High School, which opened for students recently. Worcester has also used MSBA funding for other school projects including North High School, Nelson Place Elementary School, and South High Community School.

What Comes Next The Feasibility Study will evaluate multiple options for Burncoat High School, including renovating or relocating programs, and it will recommend a preferred alternative for MSBA approval. Only after schematic design and further MSBA votes will a formal project cost and construction timeline be established. Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to stay involved as planning progresses and to review updates from Worcester Public Schools and the City of Worcester on future community meetings and report releases.
