Auburn- October 25- According to all attendees, the Century Sportsman’s Club in Auburn has outdone itself this year at their annual Haunted Hayride and Spooky walk. The 15 minute hayride is the stuff of nightmares; a hideous montage of epic horror scenes and jump-scares. It starts with a creepy skeleton metal band, winds past the iconic kill scene from hit HBO series Dexter, includes a murder in the water at a summer camp (Friday the 13th, anyone?), and ends with clowns. Creepy, crazy, partying clowns who make Stephen King’s It seem like a teddy bear.

“I screamed and laughed so hard I had tears,” said one Worcester mom accompanied by her 15 year old and friends.

The addition of “Clown Town” has even the bravest adults quivering in their seats. At the end of the hay ride, there is a fun blacklight spectacle to calm the nerves (a bit) before taking on the spooky walk. This year the maze-like ramble through fun house style rooms and dark tunnels is about a five-minute walk, if you make it through…There are exits and plenty of staff on hand to assist the faint of heart, direct traffic and run a smooth and safe operation. They can be identified by bright orange clothing.

Upon exit from the spooky walk, actors stay in character even near the food trucks which offer beverages, ice cream and quick snacks. They will snap photos with guests or maybe just sneak up behind unsuspecting minglers and stare until they scare!

Inside the club, younger attendees, and those less willing to enter the “dark side,” can watch Hocus Pocus on the big screen or sit by the fire. The cash bar offers adult beverages and bottled water. All in all, the crowd seemed thrilled by this year’s event. One attendee from Leicester said they have been coming for 20 years and this year was “well worth the $20 entrance fee.”

Thank you, Century Sportsman’s Club for keeping this local tradition alive for 26 years!
