A quiet Thursday morning in Shrewsbury turned into heartbreak after a father was killed just moments after dropping off his 6-year-old son at school.
At 8:28 a.m. on Aug. 28, the 57-year-old man, carrying his child’s scooter and helmet, decided to take a walk through the Jordan Pond trails. According to Worcester County District Attorney Joseph D. Early, Jr., he noticed a 26-year-old man on a bridge with spray paint, possibly tagging the area.
Doing what so many of us would do, the father snapped a picture. That simple act changed everything.
An altercation followed. While calling 911, dispatchers heard gunshots on the line. Shrewsbury Police rushed to the scene and found the father shot. He later died on the way to the hospital.
“This is a tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the victim,” said Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson.
The suspect—a Shrewsbury man known to SPD with a prior case in Westborough dismissed just last month—turned himself in later that day. He has not yet been publicly identified.
Lockdown Near Coolidge Elementary
Though Coolidge Elementary School was not directly involved, the school went into lockdown as a precaution. The district quickly reassured families that all students and staff were safe inside the building.
Massive Police Response
Neighbors and drivers around Jordan Pond witnessed a heavy police presence like never before. Roads near Edgewater Ave. and Plainfield Ave. were shut down. The scene included SWAT teams, more than 10 cruisers, armored vehicles, fire engines, ambulances, and even helicopters overhead. The suspect was described as “armed and dangerous” until his surrender.
A Community in Mourning
This tragedy shakes Shrewsbury—a father who did the morning school run, who carried his son’s scooter and helmet, gone in a senseless act of violence. It’s the kind of story that makes us ask: How do we make our neighborhoods safer? How do we prevent confrontations from spiraling into deadly outcomes?
For now, the Shrewsbury community is left with grief, unanswered questions, and a young boy who lost his father on what should have been just another first-day-of-school morning.
