Shots Fired on Southgate Street: One Man Dead, Another Arrested

Another summer night, another life lost. Worcester is mourning—again.

WORCESTER—The heat wasn’t the only thing rising Saturday night. Just after 7:30 PM on June 21, gunfire erupted on Southgate Street, sending neighbors running and sirens echoing through the block. When the dust settled, a man was gone, and another was in handcuffs.

Worcester Police responded to multiple 911 calls for shots fired. Officers arrived to find a man lying on the sidewalk—no name has been released as of now. They tried to save him, but he later died at the hospital.

Less than an hour later, officers made an arrest.

👤 Who Was Arrested?

Police charged 26-year-old Antonio Canales-Martinez in connection with the shooting. He’s now facing:

  • Armed Assault to Murder
  • Assault & Battery with a Firearm
  • Aggravated A&B with Serious Bodily Injury
  • Discharging a Firearm within 500 feet of a Dwelling

The Crime Scene Unit recovered a firearm at the scene, and the WPD Detective Bureau is continuing the investigation.

🧱 Real Talk: What This Means for the City

Another shooting. Another name we don’t know yet. Another family shattered.

This isn’t just a headline. This is real life for people in Worcester’s neighborhoods, especially during the summer, when emotions run high and guns come out too fast.

“It’s becoming normal, and that’s what scares me the most,” said one neighbor who didn’t want to be named. “We don’t even flinch anymore when we hear shots.”

But we should be flinching. We should be outraged. We should be checking in on each other—and demanding more from everyone: the city, the community, and ourselves.

🔍 What’s Next?

  • Police say the investigation is active—more details are expected in the coming days.
  • No motive has been released, and the victim’s name is being withheld pending family notification.
  • WPD is asking anyone with info to come forward.

🕊️ Say Their Name. Remember the Impact.

At What’s Up Worcester, we know how easy it is for stories like this to disappear in a scroll. But behind every shooting is a mother, a sibling, a child, or a friend. This is more than crime it’s trauma, and it lives in the city long after the yellow tape comes down.

If you know something, say something. And if you’re hurting, reach out. We’re all we’ve got.

📣 Stay safe. Stay informed. Stay loud.
