Overnight light snow and chilly rain will make Wednesday’s commute a slippery one
The first snowfall of the season is anticipated to bring light snow and freezing rain to the area on Tuesday night and continue into Wednesday, prompting the issuance of a winter weather alert for portions of Central and Western Massachusetts.
The forecast foresees a variety of precipitation. The National Weather Service said that higher elevation locations might get snowfall of up to two inches, followed by freezing rain. The storm may just bring cold rain to the valleys or areas that are closer to sea level.
The Berkshires and the Worcester Hills will likely experience snow. It was anticipated that Pittsfield, Great Barrington, Greenfield, and Fitchburg will receive one to two inches of snow. One inch or less may be delivered to Springfield and Worcester. Boston and other cities on the coast may not be able to enjoy any snow during this storm.
The Weather Service predicted that any snow or sleet will turn to rain in the majority of the region by midday on Wednesday as temperatures rose into the 40s.
The time spent above freezing won’t last very long. Moderate 20s in Western Massachusetts and around 30 degrees in Worcester are predicted for Wednesday night. Overnight on Wednesday, temperatures in Boston may barely rise above freezing.
