“In the heart of Worcester, where winter’s chill can be unforgiving, the warm embrace of Keeping Worcester Warm (KWW) shines brightly, offering not just physical warmth but a beacon of hope and community support,” says Jacqueline Monteiro, capturing the essence of an organization that has become synonymous with compassion.
Established in 2015, KWW’s original mission was straightforward: “Create a community event that provides warm winter wear for houseless populations and anyone else in need.” The weeks of dedicated efforts by volunteers, sorting through donated items and setting up weekly gatherings, have transformed this mission into an annual ritual of warmth for Worcester’s less fortunate.
“In 2015, I wanted to find a way for folks in recovery to give back to the same community that was gracious enough to support us. Knowing that we all have been there at one point or another,” recalls the original creator of KWW. This sentiment laid the foundation for what would evolve into a volunteer community with a diverse group of individuals committed to making a positive impact.
The journey began with a focus on essentials – “coats, blankets, boots, and socks,” catering to the immediate needs of the homeless. Over the years, this approach evolved, expanding to include Blessings Bags for local shelters and sober homes. In 2023, KWW turned its attention to El Buen Samaritano Food Program Inc. Worcester, MA, a food and clothing bank, showcasing the organization’s commitment to holistic community support lead by Executive Director Mari Gonzalez .
As September approaches each year, anticipation builds for KWW’s annual event. “We start to make our wishlist for the upcoming winters, create our annual hoodie design and theme, and find a local nonprofit or community organization to assist with winter needs,” explains Jacqueline Monteiro, setting the stage for an inclusive and community-driven gathering.
Volunteering with KWW is a testament to simplicity and inclusivity. “Show up when there is a need in the community. Age limit? There isn’t one; we are all mothers. Having to bring our infants, toddlers, and teens to every event. We encourage you to bring also,” says Jacqueline Monteiro, emphasizing the family-friendly nature of their community-building efforts.
The leadership team, comprised of Jacqueline, Penelope, and Erica, supported by the dedicated moderator Sharon, plays a crucial role. “You can reach admins by simply messaging on Facebook,” notes Jacqueline Janet, highlighting the accessibility of the leadership for those seeking to get involved or contribute.
“There’s no better feeling than giving back to the community that saved me said Erica Kniskern. “Everyone at one point or another in life will experience struggle. When I struggling the community resources in Worcester gave me a new way of life. Being a part of Keeping Worcester Warm over the years has given me the chance to give back what was so freely given to me thanks to the generous people of this community and their donations.
Beyond the tangible items distributed, KWW has successfully fostered a sense of joy and appreciation within the community. “We believe we have created a beautiful space for people to commune,” expresses Jacqueline Janet. The organization’s impact reached new heights in 2023 when a collaboration with CHL Community Closet went viral, bringing a surge of support to their cause.
“Being involved in this organization has really helped to keep me connected to what could quickly become a reality for anyone. It takes one missed paycheck, one bad decision, one final notice and no leads, one medical event, for anyone to end up in need in one way or another. It keeps my gratitude alive. As someone who did so much taking, it’s amazing to be able to give freely now.”says Admin Penelope OliveiraÂ
The challenges posed by COVID prompted KWW to rethink its operations, leading to innovative solutions. “That’s where the blessings bag came to be,” Jacqueline Janet shares, underlining the community’s resilience and creativity in overcoming obstacles.
Looking ahead, KWW’s trajectory remains dependent on community needs and capacity. “We believe that our growth is dependent on the communities and the way we present projects to the community,” says Jacqueline Janet , emphasizing the organization’s adaptive and community-driven approach.
