Greater Worcester Community Foundation Awards $500,000 in Matching Grants to 38 Local Nonprofits

The Greater Worcester Community Foundation has announced the distribution of $500,000 in grants to 38 nonprofit organizations across Worcester County. The funding is part of the first year of the Inspiring Generosity Match Fund, a philanthropic partnership with the Esler Family Foundation.
The Esler family committed a total of $1 million over two years to the fund, which operates as a donor advised fund hosted by the community foundation.
The grant program targets organizations working in three specific focus areas: mental health, youth opportunity, and economic mobility. Recipient organizations received grants of up to $25,000. To receive the full benefit of the program, each nonprofit must raise a dollar-for-dollar match by December 31, 2026. Nonprofits that successfully meet this match requirement will be eligible for an expedited renewal for a second year of funding.
Pete Dunn, president and CEO of the Greater Worcester Community Foundation, stated that the match fund is designed to strengthen programs and expand the fundraising capacity of the recipient organizations by encouraging them to connect with new donors and re-engage existing supporters.
John Esler, co-founder of the Esler Family Foundation, noted that the partnership introduced their family foundation to a broader network of local nonprofits. Jeanne Esler, co-founder of the foundation, added that the grants are intended to provide essential support to local organizations navigating unpredictable funding environments.
To assist the 38 grantees in reaching their matching goals, the Greater Worcester Community Foundation will host a “Fundraising for a Match” workshop in April through its Nonprofit Support Center.
The 2026 grant recipients span multiple community sectors. Highlighting the focus areas, Girls Incorporated of Worcester will use the funds to support its Future Pathways programming, the Genesis Club will enhance direct services for individuals with serious mental illness, and the Regional Environmental Council will support its YouthGROW program, which employs teenagers to maintain urban organic farms.
