WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Redevelopment Authority will ask residents for input next week on what should happen to the former Registry of Motor Vehicles property at 611 Main St. before seeking formal proposals for the site later this year.
The community input session is scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 2, at 5:30 p.m. in the first-floor meeting room of the Worcester Public Library, 3 Salem Square.
According to the City Manager’s Office, the property covers 65,017 square feet and contains a single-story building. About 13,330 square feet of the building is commercial space, while most of the remaining property is paved parking.
The Worcester Redevelopment Authority took ownership of the property in January 2026. The agency is responsible for activities that include urban renewal planning, land acquisition, property redevelopment and public improvements.
Before the WRA acquired the site, the property was owned by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and served as Worcester’s Registry of Motor Vehicles branch for nearly four decades.
The RMV operated at 611 Main St. from 1983 until August 2022, when the branch relocated.
The city has not announced a preferred future use for the property. Instead, Wednesday’s meeting is intended to gather ideas and feedback from residents before the redevelopment process moves to its next stage.
A Request for Proposals, or RFP, is expected to be released this fall, according to the city. An RFP would allow developers, organizations or other qualified parties to submit proposals for how the WRA-owned property could be used.
The city has not yet released the terms of that RFP, including any development requirements, financial expectations or preferred uses for the site.
The property sits along Main Street near downtown Worcester, making decisions about its future part of a larger discussion about land use and redevelopment in the city’s central area.
The WRA has broader responsibility for redevelopment and urban renewal projects in Worcester and is staffed by city departments including the Executive Office of Economic Development, City Solicitor’s Office and Budget Office.
Residents interested in the future of 611 Main St. can attend the Sept. 2 meeting at the Worcester Public Library. The city did not indicate in its Aug. 26 announcement whether a virtual participation option will be available.
