WORCESTER, MA — The sound of one of Worcester’s most historic instruments will fill Mechanics Hall each Wednesday in August as the downtown venue continues its free summer organ concert tradition.
The 2026 Worcester Organ Performance Series begins Wednesday, Aug. 5, and continues Aug. 12, 19 and 26. Each concert starts at noon and lasts approximately one hour.
Admission is free and open to the public. Registration is encouraged, and guests may bring their lunch or purchase light refreshments from the concession area.
At the center of the series is the Worcester Organ, an 1864 pipe organ built by Elias and George Hook. According to Mechanics Hall, it is the oldest unaltered four-keyboard pipe organ in the Western Hemisphere that remains in its original home.
The instrument has remained inside Mechanics Hall for more than 160 years, connecting present-day audiences with Worcester’s musical and cultural history.
“Each artist in this series brings a distinct musical perspective to the Worcester Organ,” Peter Krasinski, principal organist at Mechanics Hall, said in the announcement.
Krasinski said the organ’s versatility allows musicians to perform a wide range of music, from dynamic and colorful compositions to quieter works built around subtlety and depth.
The series begins Aug. 5 with a double-feature recital by Rosalind Mohnsen and Louise Mundinger. The performance will explore contrasting repertoire and musical styles.
Organist George Davey will perform Aug. 12 with a program designed to demonstrate the instrument’s tonal range.
Raymond Nagem will take the Great Hall stage Aug. 19 for a program drawing from multiple musical traditions.
The series concludes Aug. 26 with an Emerging Artist Recital by Brody Bett. Mechanics Hall described Bett as a child prodigy whose appearance will highlight the next generation of organists.
Meghan Montaner, executive director of Mechanics Hall, said keeping the historic instrument preserved also means creating opportunities for members of the public to experience it.
“These concerts demonstrate that preservation isn’t just about caring for a historic instrument. It’s about making sure people can experience it,” Montaner said.
The free performances are supported by the Fred Harris Daniels Foundation, the Worcester Arts Council, which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council, and individual donors.

How to Attend
The concerts will take place in the Great Hall on the third floor of Mechanics Hall, 321 Main St. in Worcester.
The Great Hall is accessible by elevator through the Waldo Street entrance. Stairs are available from both the Main Street and Waldo Street entrances.
Admission is free, although advance registration is encouraged. Guests may bring their own lunch or purchase light refreshments at the venue.

The series gives residents a free opportunity to experience live music inside one of Worcester’s best-known historic venues.
