WORCESTER, MA — After six weeks spent serving residents, learning about civic engagement and examining issues affecting Worcester, a group of young leaders will present their ideas directly to local officials, educators, nonprofit leaders and community representatives.

508 C.H.E.E.R.S. will hold its inaugural Youth Voice Summit, titled “Your Voice Matters,” on Wednesday, Aug. 5, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in the Grace Conference Room at Clark University’s Higgins University Center.

The summit marks the conclusion of the organization’s six-week Summer Leadership Experience. According to 508 C.H.E.E.R.S., the program was designed around the belief that young people should first experience and serve their community before being asked how they would improve it.

During the program, participants took part in weekly community service, leadership development and advocacy activities intended to deepen their understanding of Worcester and the challenges facing its residents.

“Before asking our youth how they would improve Worcester, we first invited them to know Worcester,” Echo Louissaint-Collins, executive director of 508 C.H.E.E.R.S., said in the announcement. “They served in our gardens, fed their neighbors, listened to stories, learned about advocacy, and discovered that leadership begins with compassion. Tonight, our community has the opportunity to listen to them.”

Six Weeks of Service and Leadership

Each Monday, participants visited a different Worcester Public Schools community garden. There, they learned about sustainability, healthy food systems, transplanting, companion planting, edible plants, weeds and environmental stewardship.

The garden visits also introduced participants to the role neighborhood growing spaces can play in improving access to healthy food.

On Tuesdays, the young people packed more than 100 Blessing Bags containing food, hygiene products and handwritten messages of encouragement. They also prepared more than 100 fresh sandwiches each week for people facing immediate needs.

Each Wednesday, participants traveled to the Out to Lunch Festival and Farmers’ Market behind Worcester City Hall, where they distributed meals and Blessing Bags to people experiencing homelessness and food insecurity.

According to the organization, those conversations gave participants firsthand exposure to the barriers some residents face in accessing food, shelter and other basic necessities, particularly during periods of extreme summer heat.

Alongside their service work, participants completed the “Your Voice Matters Youth Leadership & Advocacy Workbook.” The lessons covered identity, empowerment, civic engagement, equity, advocacy, systems and the role young people can play in creating change.

Each participant then developed a Community Impact Project focused on an issue they believe deserves more attention in Worcester.

Youth Projects to Be Presented Before Community Leaders

The summit will begin with a Community Connection and Networking Hour, giving guests an opportunity to meet participants before the formal presentations.

Each young person will wear a shirt reading, “Ask me how I’d improve Worcester,” inviting attendees to speak directly with them about their ideas and experiences.

Beginning at 5:15 p.m., participants will present their Community Impact Projects before a Community Leadership Response Panel representing local government, education, nonprofit organizations, business and community leadership.

The confirmed panel includes:

  • State Sen. Robyn Kennedy
  • Worcester City Councilor Khrystian King
  • Worcester City Councilor Rob Bilotta
  • Worcester School Committee member Sue Mailman
  • Caroline Root of the Worcester County District Attorney’s Office
  • Jennifer Safford of Clark University
  • Dianne Langford James of the Torch Foundation
  • Andrea Castinetti of Castinetti Realty Group
  • Kwame Appiah of Kumasi Soccer

The event is intended to provide participants with an opportunity to share what they learned through the summer program and present their ideas for strengthening Worcester to people working across several areas of community life.
