Worcester City Council Vice Chairman Issues Statement on Local Housing Crisis
By What’s Up Worcester Staff
Vice Chairman of the Worcester City Council Khrystian E. King released a statement on Tuesday addressing the growing challenges renters and aspiring homeowners face across the city and the state.
According to the official release from the City of Worcester, King described the current situation as a housing crisis, stating that the rental market remains severely strained as housing costs continue to outpace local income. Data cited in the release indicates that in 2025, a resident needed to earn approximately $59,640 annually to afford a modest two-bedroom apartment.
The statement highlighted a significant shift away from affordable housing options over the past decade. Between 2013 and 2022, Worcester lost more than 7,600 rental units priced under $1,000, while the number of units priced above $2,000 increased by 486 percent. Today, the average rent in the city is approximately $1,837 per month, with two-bedroom units averaging more than $2,100.
King noted that rental homes are increasingly out of reach for working families, seniors, and young people. He also emphasized that first-time buyers, including recent graduates entering the workforce, are being shut out of the single-family housing market, which he stated impacts the long-term stability of the community.
Additionally, the statement noted that families with children currently account for the largest share of those experiencing homelessness in Worcester County. King concluded the release by calling on elected officials to deliver solutions that keep residents housed and communities strong.
