Meryl’s Safe Haven will hold its third annual Rent Party Fundraiser this evening, Saturday, Jan. 24, 2026, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The event takes place at The White Room located at 138 Green Street in the Canal District. This year’s fundraiser features a Roaring Twenties theme and is designed to support young adults who are transitioning out of the foster care system.
The organization focuses on serving individuals between the ages of 18 and 24 who have aged out of the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) care. According to state data, hundreds of young people age out of the foster care system in Massachusetts each year, often facing immediate challenges with housing and resource insecurity. Meryl’s Safe Haven aims to provide the foundation necessary for these young adults to move toward self-sustainability.
Event Highlights and Mission
Tonight’s program includes a dinner provided by Unique Café, along with drinks and live entertainment. Attendees can also participate in auctions and raffles.
The Rent Party concept is a unique fundraising model intended to bring the community together for a common cause. Dr. Tasia Cerezo, the founder of Meryl’s Safe Haven, noted that the opportunity to have a stable home and a supportive community provides a critical foundation for those entering adulthood from the state care system.
Background of Meryl’s Safe Haven
Meryl’s Safe Haven was established to fulfill the vision of its namesake, Meryl, who was the aunt of Dr. Tasia Cerezo. Meryl frequently spoke about her desire to open a home for young people who lacked a support system after leaving foster care. Following Meryl’s death in a 2022 car accident, co-founders Dr. Tasia Cerezo and Marisol Cerezo worked to turn that vision into a functioning nonprofit organization.
Since its founding, the organization has expanded its reach. In March 2025, the group placed its first two young adults in stable housing through its Transitional Youth Empowerment Program. The organization also hosts monthly community meals to connect its residents with the broader Worcester community.
Addressing the Housing Gap
National statistics indicate that roughly 20 percent of young adults who age out of foster care experience homelessness immediately. Meryl’s Safe Haven addresses this local need by providing transitional housing, financial literacy programs, and workforce development support. The organization strives to recognize the humanity in shelter and advocates for housing as a fundamental right.
The proceeds from tonight’s fundraiser will go directly toward maintaining these housing services and resources. Members of the community who are unable to attend the event but wish to support the mission can find more information on the official Meryl’s Safe Haven website.
