Shot Fired on Strathmore: Deputy US Marshal Wounds Worcester Man During Arrest – In Case You Missed It Worcester News Roundup
Things got real on Strathmore Road Friday morning when a deputy U.S. Marshal shot and wounded Chris Betances, 23, during an attempted arrest. Word is, the officers were serving a warrant but Betances tried to make a run for it—hopping in a car and driving toward law enforcement. One of the Marshals wasn’t taking any chances and fired, putting Betances down but not out.
He’s now in stable condition at the hospital, facing arraignment from his hospital bed. The judge says Betances isn’t going anywhere; no bail for him. Next stop: another court date set for August 29.
It’s a heavy reminder that even when things seem quiet in Worcester, the streets are always buzzing. Neighbors reported hearing shots and watching the block swarm with law enforcement. 25 Years in the Making: Burncoat High Cracks Open the Time Capsule
A quarter-century came full circle at Burncoat High School this week. Remember the turn of the millennium? Burncoat does—they buried a concrete time capsule right in their courtyard back in 2000. Fast forward to now, and a crew of ex-teachers (shoutout to Brenda Hellerberg, Jack Chiras, and crew) with a little help from the 2001 yearbook tracked it down and dug it up.
Inside? Pure nostalgia: class photos, throwback yearbooks, letters from students dreaming about the future, art projects, old Telegram & Gazette clippings (when news still hit your doorstep), and even wild predictions about online learning and sneaker tech that actually hit kinda close.
William Foley, who taught history at Burncoat back then, put it best:
“It’s amazing to see memories from 2000 resurface and inspire reflection on how far our school community has come.”
There was plenty of storytelling and laughter as old and new faces reconnected. Burncoat’s not stopping there—they’re packing a new time capsule to be busted open by the class of 2050-something. Now that’s a legacy.

Cell Phone Ban Debate: Should We Cut the Cord in School?
What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments for the In Case You Missed It Worcester News Roundup.
Everybody’s got an opinion on this one—should Worcester join the growing list of schools banning cell phones during the school day? Teachers are fed up with TikTok distractions. Parents are torn between wanting their kids to focus and needing to text, “Did you remember your lunch?”
School officials say they’re looking at the data, visiting other cities, and asking families what they think. Some folks say a ban could help students focus; others say it’s not realistic in 2025 when everything runs on apps, QR codes, and group chats.

From the Superintendent: Brian Allen’s Welcome Back Letter
Worcester’s got a new leader at the helm—Superintendent Brian Allen starts the 2025-26 school year with a message straight to the community, families, and staff:
Dear Worcester Public Schools Students, Families, and Staff, As the school year approaches, I want to thank everyone—families, community partners, staff, and the School Committee. It’s an honor to lead as your superintendent and a proud district grad. My first priority: visit every Worcester school by the end of September, focusing on what matters most—instruction and learning. Our theme is “Vision to Action.” We’re all about future-ready skills and making every classroom count. Some good news: bus stops are out early this year, buses are fully staffed, and we’re rolling in 20 new electric buses (yep, the city’s first). Plus, crews knocked out window replacements at Worcester East Middle and added parking at Roosevelt Elementary.Let’s make this year exceptional. Success comes from belonging, respect, teamwork, and equity. I look forward to meeting so many more of you! Sincerely,
Brian Allen
