WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Branch of the NAACP is calling for immediate accountability following reports of racism and bullying directed at members of the South High Community School girls’ basketball program.
In a public statement, the organization said it “will not remain silent” in response to behavior described as discriminatory and harmful toward student-athletes representing the City of Worcester.
The statement highlights concerns over incidents involving racist remarks and online harassment, including reports that individuals threatened to contact immigration authorities during athletic events. The NAACP described this behavior as dehumanizing and unacceptable, emphasizing that youth sports environments should promote teamwork, growth, and character rather than fear and intimidation.
“As a community, we must take a firm and united stand to protect our young people,” the statement reads. “No one, especially youth participating in sports, should be subjected to such abuse.”
The NAACP also recognized the accomplishments of the South High girls’ basketball team, noting the program’s continued success in recent years. The team reached the state championship game in 2024 and 2025 and advanced to the Elite Eight in the most recent state tournament. The organization credited the athletes’ dedication, family support, and leadership from Head Coach Diago McClain.
“The young women of South High embody the spirit of Worcester with pride, discipline, and excellence,” the statement said.
The Worcester NAACP expressed its support for the players, coaches, and families involved, as well as the broader community. It is urging leadership from Worcester Public Schools, the Worcester School Committee, and the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association to conduct a full investigation into the reported incidents.
The organization is calling for clear accountability measures and a commitment to ensuring that all student-athletes are treated with dignity and respect in competitive settings.
“Threats, harassment, and discriminatory behavior in youth athletics must be confronted swiftly and without hesitation,” the statement said.
The NAACP concluded by reaffirming support for the South High players and emphasizing that no student representing Worcester should face racism, bullying, or intimidation.
