By What’s Up Worcester
We hit the streets, scrolled the feeds, and checked in with our people across the city from Main South to Vernon Hill and Piedmont to Great Brook Valley, asking one simple question:
“If you could change one thing about your neighborhood, what would it be and why?”
And let’s just say, the answers were loud, clear, and straight from the heart.
“Fix the Damn Roads!”
Top complaint? Infrastructure. From potholes swallowing tires whole to sidewalks that haven’t seen love in decades, folks are tired of dodging danger just trying to get to work or walk their kids to school.
“We’re paying taxes; where is it going? My stroller shouldn’t feel like I’m off-roading in the woods,” said Tina from Chandler Street.
“We Need More Presence, Not Pressure”
Public safety is a big topic. Some are asking for more streetlights, security cameras, or regular patrols. Others want more community-based safety, not just police riding through and bouncing.
“We need people who know us, not just showing up when it’s already bad,” said Marcus in Grafton Hill.
“Green Spaces That Actually Feel Safe”
Several people mentioned wanting parks that are actually usable, not run-down, overgrown, or feeling sketchy after dark. Some neighborhoods barely have a patch of grass, while others watch their rec spaces sit half-finished for years.
“Kids need a place to just be kids. Not everyone’s parents can drive them across town to a nice park,” said Jazmin from Belmont Street.
“Food Deserts are Real”
Want to grab fresh produce in some parts of the city? Good luck. Many residents pointed out the lack of healthy food options within walking distance.
“We got liquor stores and dollar stores, but where’s the grocery store?” asked DeShawn from GBV.
“Clean It Up!”
Overflowing trash, busted sidewalks, abandoned houses. Worcester has character, but it doesn’t have to look neglected.
“We deserve to feel proud of where we live. That starts with the city showing up and cleaning up,” said Maria in Main South.
The Bottom Line
People love their neighborhoods; they’re just tired of being overlooked. From basic maintenance to real investment, folks are calling out what’s broken and asking for the resources to fix it. Because at the end of the day, everyone deserves to feel safe, seen, and supported where they live.
So we’re putting the question to you:
👉🏾 What would you change about your neighborhood, and why?
Drop your answer in the comments. Let’s keep this convo going. Because if we don’t speak up, nothing changes.
