The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are riding high on their recent success, clinching an NFC South title in the first season post-Tom Brady’s retirement. As the team sets its sights on a deep playoff run, the potential return of quarterback Baker Mayfield for the 2024 season has become a topic of mutual interest.

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport revealed the ongoing discussions between the Buccaneers and Mayfield on NFL GameDay Morning. While there is a possibility of Mayfield securing a lucrative long-term deal, the franchise tag remains a viable option. In 2023, franchise-tagged quarterbacks enjoyed a substantial $32.416 million salary, marking a significant increase from Mayfield’s one-year contract signed in the same year, valued at up to $8.5 million with incentives.

Mayfield, operating on a prove-it deal in 2023, showcased his prowess by delivering career-high numbers in passing yards (4,044) and touchdowns (28). His stellar performance played a crucial role in guiding Tampa Bay to a division title. Notably, he continued to impress in the playoffs, throwing three touchdowns in the recent upset win over the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Rapoport highlighted that each playoff victory for Mayfield in 2023 triggers a $250,000 bonus. The quarterback is now gearing up for the Divisional Round clash against the Detroit Lions, aiming to add to his postseason success.

The initial report of mutual interest between Mayfield and the Buccaneers surfaced in December, and the quarterback’s consistent excellence on the field since then has only strengthened the prospect of a prolonged partnership. Mayfield’s journey to Tampa Bay had its uncertainties after a sudden departure from the Panthers in 2022, leading to his midseason release. However, his stint with the Los Angeles Rams, where he made four starts, demonstrated the lingering potential of the former No. 1 overall pick.

The Buccaneers find themselves reaping the rewards of taking a chance on Mayfield, who appears to have found a sense of security and belonging in Tampa Bay. As the team and quarterback align their interests for the 2024 season and possibly beyond, the Buccaneers may be securing a key piece to their continued success in the NFL.
