Worcester, Massachusetts, Friday, August 18, 2023 – A collaborative coalition of local nonprofit organizations has taken a significant stride forward in the fight against the escalating housing crisis that has affected Worcester’s community. Comprising a diverse array of nonprofit entities committed to serving and advocating for the well-being of Worcester residents, the coalition has jointly filed a compelling petition with the Worcester City Council, urging immediate and concerted measures to alleviate the pressing housing crisis.
The housing crisis in Worcester has placed families, individuals, and vulnerable members of the community in dire circumstances, grappling with the challenges of unaffordable housing and an increasing incidence of homelessness. United under a common goal, the growing list of supporting nonprofit organizations, which includes Pleasant Street Neighborhood Network Center, Worcester Socialist Alternative, Worcester Community Fridges, F.A.M. Jam! Event Group, Mass Spring Group, The Village, and Pa’Lante Worcester, aims to catalyze change and bring relief to those most affected by this crisis.
The joint petition emphasizes two key actions:
Acknowledging the Crisis: The coalition fervently calls upon the Worcester City Council to formally acknowledge the housing crisis as an urgent matter demanding prompt attention. Such acknowledgment underscores the gravity of the situation and underscores the city’s commitment to addressing the hardships faced by its most vulnerable residents.
Declaration of Local State of Emergency: The coalition implores the Worcester City Council to request the City Manager declare a local state of emergency in direct response to the housing crisis. This declaration would facilitate the mobilization of essential resources, enabling collaborative efforts among stakeholders and expediting the implementation of timely intervention measures.
The joint petition, a testament to the shared commitment of these nonprofit organizations, underscores the fundamental importance of safe and affordable housing in fostering a vibrant and resilient Worcester.
The coalition remains dedicated to fostering constructive dialogue, pursuing innovative solutions, and collaborating closely with Worcester city officials to devise comprehensive strategies to address the housing crisis at its core.
