Historic Worcester Boys Club Reopens as $16 Million Community Arts Center

By Jerry Filmore
After a decade of development and fundraising efforts, Creative Hub Worcester has announced the grand opening of its new Community Arts Center at 2 Ionic Avenue. The project, which involved a $16 million rehabilitation of the historic Worcester Boys Club building, will officially open to the public on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
Originally constructed in 1914, the building is listed on both the Massachusetts State Register and the National Register of Historic Places. The structure served as a neighborhood anchor for decades before sitting vacant. According to Creative Hub Worcester, the restoration was funded through a combination of grassroots donations, public grants, foundation support, and federal and state historic tax credits.
For Worcester residents and the local arts community, the center provides a new infrastructure for creative work and public engagement. The facility features 26 artist studios designed for both emerging and established creators, a public gallery for rotating exhibitions, and flexible spaces for performances and community gatherings. The organization also plans to host various classes and workshops for both youth and adults.
Laura Marotta, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Creative Hub Worcester, stated that the opening is the result of ten years of persistence and problem-solving. Marotta noted that the project at times felt nearly impossible, but remained a priority due to the building’s historical significance and the need for dedicated creative spaces in the city.
The grand opening celebration on April 15 will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by open studios and interactive art experiences. The inaugural exhibition in the Creative Hub Gallery will feature large-scale silk artworks by artist Xiang Li. While the event is free and open to the public, the organization requires an RSVP via Eventbrite for those planning to attend.
Applications for artist studio rentals are currently open as the first wave of tenants prepares to move into the building. Those unable to attend the opening can contact the organization to schedule private tours of the renovated landmark.
