The Worcester Department of Parks, Recreation & Cemetery will temporarily close Elm Park Playground starting September 12, 2025, to address an issue with the recently installed safety surface. The contractor will remove and replace the surface at no cost to the City of Worcester. The playground is expected to reopen in early fall.
What’s Happening
Post-installation testing identified a problem with the new safety surface at Elm Park Playground. Out of an abundance of caution and to meet required safety standards, the city is closing the playground while the contractor replaces the surface. The work includes removing the affected material, installing a new surface to specification, and completing inspections prior to reopening.

This repair will be completed by the contractor at no cost to taxpayers.
Timeline
- Closure begins: September 12, 2025
- Expected reopening: Early fall (weather and inspection dependent)
The city will share updates as work progresses.

Accountability and Safety
