WORCESTER On Sunday, February 15, the EcoTarium welcomed more than 1,100 visitors for a community celebration marking the Lunar New Year. The weekend event highlighted the transition into the Year of the Horse with cultural performances and educational programming.
The celebration featured a live lion dance performed by the SUN Lion Dance Team, representing the Southeast Asian Coalition of Central Massachusetts (SEACMA).

Several local officials attended the gathering, including State Senator Robyn Kennedy, District 2 City Councilor Robert Bilotta, and District 4 City Councilor Luis Ojeda. EcoTarium President and Chief Executive Officer Noreen Smith addressed the crowd, noting that the Worcester event coincided with Lunar New Year celebrations observed by nearly two billion people worldwide.
Mayor Joe Petty also spoke at the event, highlighting the importance of recognizing the cultural diversity within the City of Worcester. He wished the attendees health, prosperity, and good luck for the new year.
In addition to the cultural performances, the museum provided various educator-led activities throughout the day. Visitors had the opportunity to make paper lanterns and attend a zookeeper presentation focused on snake feeding. Museum staff also distributed fortune cookies and mandarin oranges, which are traditional symbols of prosperity.
Debra Shear, the chief advancement officer for the EcoTarium, stated that the strong attendance figures demonstrate the community’s appreciation for the annual event. She noted that the museum looks forward to continuing the tradition in the future.

Located at 222 Harrington Way, the EcoTarium was founded in 1825 and has provided science and nature education for 201 years. The 45-acre campus includes interactive indoor exhibits, an outdoor wildlife zoo, and nature trails.
