WORCESTER, MA — The City of Worcester will dedicate the basketball court at Greenwood Park in honor of Nancy Mayer Bates during a ceremony scheduled for Saturday, September 19.

The dedication will take place at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Park, located at 14 Forsberg Street. According to the Office of the Mayor, the public is invited to attend the ceremony honoring Bates for her accomplishments in basketball and her career in Worcester public education.

Bates grew up in Worcester and attended South High School, where the city says she established herself as one of the school’s standout athletes. Her high school basketball career earned her All-American recognition and placed her among the top players in the country.

She continued her basketball career at the University of Virginia, where she played for four seasons and served as team captain twice. According to the city, Bates consistently ranked among the top players in her conference during her college career.

Her accomplishments were later recognized by the Atlantic Coast Conference, which named her an ACC All-Time Basketball Legend.

After graduating from the University of Virginia, Bates returned to Worcester and spent the next three decades working in public education. The city said she worked at North High School, where she focused on supporting students and contributing to the education of future generations.

The court dedication recognizes both parts of Bates’ career: her accomplishments as an athlete and her work as an educator in Worcester.

Mayor Joseph M. Petty and Councilor-at-Large Khrystian King are listed among the city officials associated with the dedication announcement.

The dedication is scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11 a.m. at Greenwood Park, 14 Forsberg Street, Worcester.

The Office of the Mayor issued the announcement on August 25, 2026. The city has not provided additional details about the ceremony’s program or whether other speakers will participate.
