Color the City Festival Returns to Worcester Common With Youth-Led Art, Music and Community Activities

WORCESTER, MA — The Worcester Common will become a youth-designed neighborhood filled with art, music, skating, vendors and hands-on activities when the Color the City Festival returns for its sixth year on Friday, Aug. 7.
The free, family-friendly festival will run from 3 to 8 p.m. A rain date is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 14.
This year’s theme, “It Takes a Village,” will highlight the people, creativity and connections that help strengthen the Worcester community. Young artists and organizers will divide the Common into unique districts representing different parts of community life.
Visitors will be able to explore music, games, workshops, public art, local vendors and creative spaces designed for people of different ages to participate and connect.
Color the City is organized and coordinated by young people participating in Create 508, working in collaboration with the City of Worcester Cultural Development Division and Division of Youth Opportunities.
Create 508 is a youth arts and leadership program for Worcester residents ages 14 to 24. The program gives participants practical experience in public art, event production, community engagement and the business side of creative work.
Throughout the program, participants work alongside artist mentors while developing skills in leadership, collaboration, public speaking, networking, problem-solving and professional development. Each summer, they take the lead in planning and producing Color the City, including designing installations, coordinating activities and helping manage event logistics.
The festival will also feature live performances and hands-on activities. Public artwork designed and created by Create 508 participants will be displayed throughout the event.
Lights Multitainment will offer free admission for roller skating at the Worcester Common Oval. Skate rentals will be available for $5.
A creative market featuring local artists, crafters and food trucks will be located along Franklin Street. The street will be closed to vehicle traffic near the Common from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. to accommodate the market and festival activities.
The festival is supported by the Worcester Community Action Council and Worcester Cultural Coalition.
