Worcester Public Schools to Hold April 15 Community Forum on School Boundary and Quadrant Alignment Project

By What’s Up Worcester Staff
Worcester Public Schools will hold a community forum on Wednesday, April 15, from 5 to 6 p.m. at Doherty Memorial High School as part of the district’s ongoing School Boundary and Quadrant Alignment Project.
According to Worcester Public Schools, the forum will be the second public meeting in a series being held this spring to share information and gather feedback from parents, caregivers, and community members about the district realignment process. The April 15 meeting will be held at Doherty Memorial High School, 299 Highland Street.
Worcester Public Schools said the forum will be facilitated by a team from Dillinger Research and Applied Data, which the district described as a nonprofit data analysis organization. The district also said language translation services and childcare will be provided.
Attendees are encouraged by the district to bring a smartphone, tablet, or laptop. Worcester Public Schools said a limited number of tablets will also be available for audience members.
According to the district, the School Boundary and Quadrant Alignment Project is examining whether school boundaries and related systems should be adjusted to assign students more efficiently and improve the experiences of students and families. Worcester Public Schools said that could include changes affecting a student’s walk to school, the school they are assigned to attend, and feeder patterns, which refer to the series of schools connected to a student’s residential address.
The district said the goals of the project include:
- Reducing student populations at schools that are over capacity.
- Increasing enrollment at schools that are under capacity.
- Aligning programming with school building capacity and community needs.
- Improving feeder patterns and citywide or magnet designations.
For Worcester families, the project has the potential to affect school assignments and daily routines across the city. Changes to boundaries or feeder patterns can shape where students attend school, how families plan transportation, and how neighborhoods connect to school communities. The April 15 meeting is one of the public opportunities for residents to hear more about the process and offer feedback before potential scenarios are presented to the Worcester School Committee.
According to Worcester Public Schools, potential scenarios are expected to be shared with the School Committee in June. The district also said additional public forums are planned for late summer and fall to discuss specific scenarios, with a goal of making a final presentation to the School Committee in November.
Worcester Public Schools recently announced that members of the public, along with WPS parents, guardians, staff, and students in grades 9 through 12, can sign up for project updates through ParentSquare. The district said messages sent through that platform can be translated into more than 180 languages.
