WORCESTER, MA — January 12, 2026 The “Heart of the Commonwealth” is about to get a major boost in brainpower. This Thursday, January 15, the City of Worcester and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) will gather at City Hall to formally sign into existence the Academic Civic Collaborative.
This new initiative isn’t just a handshake; it’s a strategic expansion of a partnership that has already shaped our city for decades. By creating a formal pipeline for civic projects, the Collaborative aims to turn WPI’s technical expertise into real-world solutions for Worcester’s most pressing municipal challenges.
Bridging the Gap Between Campus and City Hall
The signing event, scheduled for 1 p.m. in the Levi Lincoln Room, will feature City Manager Eric D. Batista and WPI President Grace Wang. The Collaborative is designed to streamline how the city identifies needs—from infrastructure and urban planning to sustainability, and matches them with WPI’s faculty and student project teams.
According to preliminary details, the city is expected to identify up to four major projects annually that will serve as “premier partners” for WPI’s signature project-based learning model.

Spotlight on the “Design and Community Partnership”
The first big move under this new umbrella is the launch of the Design and Community Partnership. This specific arm brings together:
- The City of Worcester’s civic leadership.
- WPI’s Architectural Engineering Program, led by Director Steven Van Dessel (the mind behind Worcester’s WWI Memorial at Green Hill Park).
- The American Institute of Architects Central Massachusetts (AIACM), represented by Sean Brennan.
The goal here is simple: improve Worcester’s “built environment.” Whether it’s rethinking public plazas, designing more resilient housing, or improving the walkability of our neighborhoods, this partnership puts professional architects and engineering students in the same room to build a better version of the “Woo.”
Why It Matters for the 508
For residents, this means more than just research papers. It means that the people designing the next generation of smart cities are using Worcester as their primary laboratory.
WPI has already invested over $140 million in Gateway Park and contributes thousands of community service hours annually. This new Collaborative marks a shift from “good neighbors” to “active co-designers” of the city’s future.
