This summer, something pretty amazing happened right here in Worcester: 850 kids from our area got to live out every science-loving kid’s dream. They became real health scientists for a day, complete with lab coats, experiments, and the kind of hands-on learning that makes science stick.
Thanks to the EcoTarium and a partnership with GSK Science in the Summer™, nearly 850 children between Springfield and Boston (with plenty of Worcester kids in the mix) spent their summer break doing way more than scrolling through screens. They were designing tools to unclog arteries, testing drinks for vitamin C levels, and stepping into the shoes of athletic trainers, cardiologists, and dieticians.
When Kids Become the Experts
Picture this: your 8-year-old comes home from the EcoTarium talking about how they just figured out which sports drink has the most vitamin C or how they built a tiny tool that could help fix someone’s heart. That’s exactly what happened this summer with the “Be a Health Scientist!” theme.

The program didn’t just throw science facts at kids—it let them become the scientists. Each activity told a story that invited students to step into a specific health science role. One day they might be athletic trainers figuring out the best recovery drinks for athletes. The next, they’re cardiologists learning how blood flows through arteries and designing tools to help when things go wrong.
“This isn’t your typical summer camp craft time,” says one parent whose daughter participated. “She came home talking about experiments like she’d been doing them for years.”
More Than Just Fun (Though It Was Definitely Fun)
Here’s what makes this program special—it’s 100% free. No registration fees, no hidden costs, no “suggested donations” that make families feel awkward. GSK Science in the Summer™ exists specifically to make sure every kid, regardless of their family’s financial situation, gets access to high-quality STEM education.
And that matters more than you might think. The program specifically focuses on reaching kids in under-resourced communities—places where science camps and STEM programs might be out of reach otherwise. In Worcester, we know how important that is. Every kid deserves the chance to see themselves as a future scientist, engineer, or healthcare worker.

The numbers back up why this works: nationally, GSK Science in the Summer™ has reached more than 400,000 children across the US since it launched. But it started right here in the Northeast – in Philadelphia – as part of GSK’s commitment to making STEM education accessible to everyone.
The Science Behind the Science
What’s really cool is how the program approaches learning. Instead of just reading about how the heart works, kids actually get to build models and test theories. Instead of memorizing nutrition facts, they conduct real experiments to see which foods and drinks contain which vitamins.
“By bringing scientific concepts to life through fun, hands-on learning opportunities, GSK Science in the Summer™ gives students tangible examples of the types of STEM career paths they can pursue in their future,” said Maya Martinez-Davis, President, US at GSK.
The curriculum comes from The Franklin Institute—you know, the famous science museum in Philadelphia that’s been getting people excited about science since forever. They develop all the activities and make them freely available online at scienceinthesummer.fi.edu, which means the learning doesn’t have to stop when summer ends.

Worcester’s Role in the Bigger Picture
The EcoTarium has been our local hero in making this happen. As New England’s leading museum of science and nature, they’ve been inspiring Worcester-area kids for nearly 200 years – yeah, you read that right, they were founded in 1825. They know a thing or two about making science accessible and fun.
“GSK Science in the Summer™ aims to increase youth interest and confidence in doing science and pursuing STEM careers, especially those in under-resourced communities,” said Dr. Darryl Williams, Senior Vice President of Science, Education, and HR at The Franklin Institute. “When youth have high-quality, positive STEM experiences outside of the school setting with educators with whom they closely identify, it increases their positive STEM identity and allows them to see themselves as belonging in science.”
That’s exactly what Worcester needs. We want our kids to see STEM careers as real possibilities, not just something that happens to other people in other places. When a kid from Main South or Green Island gets to spend a day being a “cardiologist,” they might start picturing themselves in a lab coat for real someday.
What This Means for Worcester Families
For parents, this program is a win-win-win. Your kids get quality educational time during summer break, you don’t have to worry about the cost, and they come home genuinely excited about learning. In a world where it’s easy for kids to get disconnected from hands-on learning, programs like this remind us why real, tactile experiences matter.
The timing couldn’t be better either. With healthcare being such a huge industry in Central Massachusetts—we’ve got UMass Memorial, Saint Vincent, and plenty of other major medical facilities right here—getting kids interested in health sciences early could set them up for careers that’ll keep them right here in Worcester.
Looking Ahead: Next Year’s Theme
Here’s something to get excited about: the EcoTarium is already planning for next year, and the theme is going to be “Be a Chemist!” If this summer’s health science theme was any indication, next year’s program is going to be just as hands-on, just as engaging, and just as free.
The partnership between GSK, The Franklin Institute, and the EcoTarium is solid, which means Worcester families can count on this program being here for years to come. Mark your calendars now—summer 2026 is going to be all about chemistry, and if your kids are in grades 2-6, they’re going to love it.
Why This Matters for Our Community
When 850 kids in our region spend their summer learning about health science, that’s not just 850 kids having fun—that’s 850 potential future doctors, nurses, researchers, and healthcare workers. That’s 850 young people who now know that science isn’t just something you read about in textbooks.
In Worcester, we’re always talking about keeping our young people here, giving them reasons to stay and build their careers in our city. Programs like GSK Science in the Summer™ plant those seeds early. A kid who spends a summer as a “health scientist” at the EcoTarium might just be the one who comes back to Worcester after college to work at UMass Medical or starts their own biotech company downtown.

That’s the kind of long-term thinking that makes communities stronger. It’s not just about this summer—it’s about the next generation of Worcester leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers.
The best part? Every family in Worcester has access to this opportunity. No barriers, no gatekeeping, just pure science fun that happens to be building the foundation for some pretty amazing futures.
So next summer, when registration opens up for “Be a Chemist!” at the EcoTarium, remember what 850 kids just experienced. They didn’t just play scientist for a day—they became scientists. And that kind of confidence and curiosity? That stays with you for life.
